Introduction
KA Imaing's proprietary patented amorphous selenium (a-Se) X-ray camera, BrillianSeTM, is dedicated to high-brightness imaging. Based on amorphous selenium (a-Se) photoconductive devices with high intrinsic spatial resolution, the a-Se/CMOS hybrid detector directly converts X-rays into electronic charge. The electrical signal is then read out by a low-noise active pixel sensor (APS) CMOS. Compared with indirect detection methods based on scintillators, our direct detection technology eliminates the need to first convert X-rays into visible light and to thin the conversion layer to reduce effects such as optical scattering. BrillianSeTM provides both high resolution based on 8 μm pixels and high detective quantum efficiency (DQE) at energies up to 100 keV. These features enable the detector to be used efficiently for high-energy, low-flux absorption imaging, while also enhancing sensitivity in low-density material imaging through an in-line (grating-free) phase-contrast enhancement mechanism.

We used the detector to rapidly acquire phase-contrast images of Kevlar composite materials within seconds. Individual fiber morphology (left image) and fiber delamination (right image) can be clearly observed.
