Introduction

Compact low-power radiation camera powered by the cutting-edge Timepix3 chip

The AdvaPIX MAGIC is the world's first photon-counting detector operating in data-driven mode. This means that every radiation hit event is recorded in real time as a continuous data stream. The device is capable of measuring the position, energy, and time of arrival of each detected quantum.

The detector is equipped with a 256×256 array of spectroscopic pixels based on silicon (Si) or cadmium telluride (CdTe) sensors, with each pixel capable of recording the energy spectrum of incident events. Time-stamp measurements also enable event coincidence verification or charge-sharing analysis between pixels.

This technology opens new horizons for ionizing radiation detection. The camera module employs the Timepix3 device developed at CERN, offering ultra-fast sparse data readout capable of capturing up to 38 million pixel hit events per second. The module achieves high-speed data transfer to the system via a USB 3.0 communication channel. The device comes standard with PIXet Pro software for detector control and data acquisition analysis, along with plug-in modules for extended advanced functionality.

Typical Applications

  • Energy-resolved imaging (X-ray, neutron, ion)

  • Particle tracking

  • Time-of-flight imaging

  • Compton camera

  • X-ray spectral imaging

  • Crystallographic analysis (small-angle scattering/X-ray diffraction)

By depositing a conversion layer (6LiF), the sensor can be adapted for neutron imaging needs. Combined with advanced data processing techniques that record individual hit events, ultra-high spatial resolution imaging can be achieved, with resolution reaching the micrometer level (X-ray) or even sub-micrometer level (ions).

Company Introduction

Advacam S.R.O. originated from the Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics of the Czech Technical University, and is dedicated to providing silicon sensor fabrication, microelectronic packaging, radiation imaging cameras, and X-ray imaging solutions across multidisciplinary business fields.

The core technical feature of Advacam is that its X-ray detectors (using Timepix chips) have no gaps, resulting in outstanding performance in non-destructive testing, biomedicine, geology and mining, art, and neutron imaging. Advacam maintains strong project collaborations with NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and ESA (European Space Agency), and its products and solutions are also applied in the aerospace field.
